Western Rails
The Southwest Chief (No. 4) in early morning western New Mexico light,
Railroad people call me a "foamer." (I assume that's because rail fans foam at the mouth when we see a train? Or even empty track.) "Rail fan." is a more polite term. And while it is not easy to make an original photograph of a train that says something new, I'll never stop trying. It's too much fun. Besides, the Southwest Chief follows along the old Santa Fe Trail, the route of the Santa Fe's Super Chief, and the Mother Road, Route 66. The route is dotted with history and beautiful landscapes in which to make train photographs.
“I have often wondered if the beauty of train is artistically legitimate or if it is a specialized thing appealing only to the neuroses of a fortunate few.”
